Hotdog with guacamole

(Friday, 27 February 2009)

It’s around 2.30pm, and it’s bloody hot in Guatemala City. I’m about to get on a bus to Coban, where we’ll probably spend the night – we’ve a 6h ride ahead of us…

From there, we’ll have to take another 2 buses that final get us to the final destination for the weekend: Semuc Champey.

I’m starving, so I go walk around the block in search for meat. Yep, like a faming carnivore. Most volunteers at UPAVIM are vegetarian, and so are our meals – at least at dinner time; at lunch we share the food which is prepared by UPAVIM’s kitchen for the kids in the kindergarten and school. So, I’m starting to dream of nice rare steaks at night…

I find a hotdog food stall. Here they serve the typical add-ons – fried onions, a bit of salad and sauce – plus 2 specials: guacamole and chilli.

Damn good.

Recipe for guacamole: smash a few avocados, add onions and garlic cut in small pieces, plus a bit of salt and pepper. Mix it up, put it in the fridge for a while… and that’s it.

Damn good.

So, here’s something to add to my renewed – or should I rather say new born? – pleasure to cook.
